What a year it has been! I am so thankful for my clients who hired me in 2016 to capture their fleeting moments. Nearly four years ago when I began this adventure I couldn’t have imagined that I’d be in my own nearly 1000 sq ft studio located in North Wales Montgomery County Pa and having photographed over 80 maternity, newborn, sitter, and birthday sessions in a year! Not to mention my fall family sessions, stylized Holiday sessions, extended family sessions, and the Daddy and Me alumni sessions I photograph in honor of my late father. I’ve seen my work grow tremendously this past year, and am super excited about what 2017 has to offer me. Some things coming up this year include hosting a newborn workshop with the amazing Nicole Smith of Nicole Smith Photography once again in April. I’m also traveling to Rochester in August to attend a workshop with Sarah Beth Photography and I cannot wait to see how much my family work grows after meeting her! She is the master at capturing genuine interaction between families! In January I’ll be offering my first photography course for those of you who want to step up your own camera skills.
Also on the calendar in 2017 is more events through my “sister company” Balanced Mama. One of the reasons I made the jump to the solo studio in May was because Abby and I had been brainstorming this project of ours to create a place where Moms, new to the game or well versed, had a place to come together to support one another. We had a few meetings this summer on Friday mornings and then, as the title of the company is Balanced Mama, we needed to find our balance in the start of the school year, so we put the project on the back burner. Still simmering 😉 We launched our kick off event on December 31, 2016 with NOON YEARS EVE and with around 40 attendees it was quite the fun party! Keep your eye out for more from Balanced Mama this year!
But here are some of my top 10 favorite images from 2016!
Shortly after my workshop with Nicole Smith. I finally found a black and white preset that I am deeply in love with.
Being in the business nearly 4 years I now recognize the signs of a baby about to smile… and used that skill here:
I mean.. what’s not to love about your own kiddos captured perfectly. My older son always the protector and my younger always flip flopping between solemn (here) and class clown. This year I found the perfect spot at a local creek (previously we splashed only as a family at a place near to our church about 45 minutes away). Bringing clients creekside this year were some of my favorite sessions!
I mean… how could a unicorn not be in my top 10! A year ago I watched this little lady come into the world and gasp her first breath. When her mama mentioned having a pony and bringing a unicorn horn to the session I had envisioned a rocking horse……. a week or two before the session when she mentioned shooting at the farm that Fella lived at I realized that we were going to be incorporating a real mini horse!
From this session I could add every single image. Fall evenings lead me to the perfect light. Not too late for littles, not to hot for dads, adding in layers to wardrobe, and capturing the emotions and interactions of families. <3
A few reasons this makes the list… it’s a returning client. I photographed her big sister two years ago. The biggest compliment is a returning family! A second reason I love this one is it truly reflects where my work is headed; the use of neutral tones, the shadowing and light, the relaxed hands in her pose…
Why is this one of my favorites? Well not only because the family is adorable, but also because they are impeccably dressed. This year I sat down for a Sunday afternoon and created a blog post and style guide for my clients. Took me a whole afternoon, but I knew that the hours put into it would pay off in the long run, and boy did it ever! Every single fall family client showed up in the most gorgeous wardrobes!
Another session where we found the joy in playing in the late evening light. We spun in circles, played with bubbles, snuggled with mom and dad, and captured those sweet little curls.
Heading to the hospital for Fresh 48 sessions are most certainly one of my favorite things to do. Being a fly on the wall while a family of five is together for the first time ever always brings a tear to my eye! Seeing that moment that former little brother gets promoted to big brother. These moments are unforgettable.
Why I love this? Because this stunning expecting mama and her husband remind me to stop and breathe in the moments. To slow it down and soak it in. And because it showcases my new studio… 😛
I’m not the only one with a top ten list! I teamed up with my friend Shannon Payne of Shannon Payne Photography located in Hendersonville, Tennessee she works with Nashville area clients. Her newborn images are divine and worth checking out! Take a look at her top ten list here!
